Set Design for Film and Television
Have you ever thought about designing a spaceship for the future, or an 1800s shanty from the gold rush era? Do you like imagining spaces but finding the real world too limiting for your creativity? Are you intrigued by the immense worldbuilding in cinema and want to be part of it? Learn more about the dynamic role of Set Designer for film and television.
From the production designer’s concept drawings and brief, the set designer creates working drawings (sketches, plans, elevations, sections, 3D models and details), by hand or with CAD, from which studio sets, location builds and specific props are costed and constructed. They work closely with art directors to help supervise construction on the sets they have drawn, ensuring the design objectives are realised.
Join a panel of set designers for film and television as they discuss their pathways into the film industry, the skills they use most at work, how they collaborate with other departments and the future of set design in Virtual Production with the rise of new technologies and Unreal Engine.
Our panellists include Wei Guo (Shantaram, New Gold Mountain, Crazy Fun Park); Benjamin Donnelly (Thor: Ragnarok, Godzilla vs Kong, Aquaman); Chisomo Banzi (Nautilus, Young Rock, The Wilds); Kennardi Sebastian (Metropolis) and Amelia Hutchinson (Better Man, Foe, La Brea).
This event will be held in-person and over Zoom, moderated by VCA Master of Production Design Coordinator, Jo Briscoe. The panellists will showcase their work and share their experiences in the film and television industry, and conclude with a Q&A session. After the panel concludes we will host a social networking event for in-person attendees to connect with our panellists. Complimentary refreshments will be provided.
